Bodrum, Turkey
Bodrum is a stunning, cosmopolitan resort located on the Aegean coast. Surrounded by Turquoise blue seas Bodrum is the home of the famous Bodrum Castle and the image of the historic Bodrum Castle set in the water is used in many marketing campaigns for Turkey. Originally known as Halicarnassos; the history of Bodrum, amazingly, dates right back to 1300BC, with many civilisations settling here over the years. Bodrum’s finest period was the 3rd century BC, when Bodrum was capital of Caria, and famous for it’s sailing and boatbuilding trade. The Roman and Byzantine empires both ruled Bodrum for a number of years prior to moving on, leaving the city wide of open for the Knights of St. John who made themselves at home around 1402, building the castle that still stands proud as arguably Bodrum’s most famous landmark
Not only famous for the Castle, Bodrum is home to gorgeous beaches, modern & traditional properties, friendly people and an abundance of bars and restaurants all offering an array of delicious foods to cater for every taste. Winding cobbled streets lead you through a maze of bazaars where bartering for a bargain is a must and as for markets, Bodrum has them in abundance. On Tuesdays, Bodrum is host to the famous fabrics and clothing market, and Thursdays and Friday's markets sell all types of different foods. For supermarket shopping, Bodrum has Migros and Gima supermarkets, both selling a mix of imported and Turkish goods and if that isn't enough the shops in Bodrum stay open until the early hours of the morning!
If shopping isn't your thing you can pass your time in Bodrum by navigating around the historical sites, such as St. Peter's castle and it's hugely popular Turkish Bath, the Ottoman Tower, or the Mausoleum of Halikarnassus, which is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. For water enthusiasts Bodrum is known for it’s excellent sailing facilities (it is home to the Bodrum Cup, a famous annual yacht regatta held each year for wooden boats) and for culture vultures there are often a variety of festivals in Bodrum for visitors to attend. In early September, Bodrum is host to a Turkish Music and Arts festival, which takes place on both land and water and in June there is the film festival which is held in Bodrum Castle!! There's lots to keep you entertained and plenty of activities to try in Bodrum!
